Primary
Religion In first grade, students learn about the birth, death, Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus; become familiar with the Bible, learn simple prayers, and participate in Mass. Second grade students prepare to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Communion and develop a deeper understanding of the Mass and the Church as our community of faith. Third graders grow to recognize the Church as a prayerful, caring community. Particular emphasis is placed upon the need to live the word of Christ in everyday life.
Reading The reading curriculum in grades one to three focuses upon developing strong phonics and word attack skills, increasing comprehension, and perfecting critical reading skills. By third grade, students are able to evaluate information and answer analytic questions. Our reading series is fully integrated, literature-based with English, phonics, spelling, and writing components.
Language Arts The curriculum is a combination of creative writing, grammar, spelling and handwriting. In grade one, stress is placed on correct use of nouns and verbs. Formal writing begins at this level. Second graders continue developing sentence structure and expand to paragraph writing. At the third grade level, all previously introduced grammar and spelling rules are reviewed, and essays, reports, letters and poetry are expanded.
Science Hands-on learning and group experiments are conducted in the classroom. Children study plants and animals, weather, the senses, space, simple machines, electricity and ecology.
Mathematics In first grade, children are introduced to solving problems dealing with addition, subtraction, place value, time and money. Many hands-on manipulatives are used. The notion of fractions, geometry, multiplication and division are introduced in the second and third grades. Students practice and reinforce math skills using the computer.
Social Studies The primary grades study communities using five perspectives: social/cultural, political, economic, geographic and historic. Life styles of Native Americans and colonists are investigated. Map and globe skills refined. Audiovisual presentations are utilized to evoke student interest and greater understanding of social studies concepts.
