Intermediate
Our fourth, fifth and sixth grade curriculum builds upon the basic skills acquired in the primary grades with emphasis on inquiry and exploration.
Religion The fourth grade focuses on the study of the Commandments and the Beatitudes. The Works of Mercy provide students practical application to their daily lives. Fifth graders continue their journey of faith by an in-depth study of the seven sacraments. The sixth grade program begins the study of the Bible as a book of faith, particularly the Old Testament.
Reading The goals of the intermediate reading program include children becoming acquainted with the most important ideas, themes and values from their cultural heritage. Children are stimulated to become effective communicators with a strong ability to think both creatively and critically. These goals are accomplished through the integration of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Language Arts The intermediate English program concentrates on making language an effective vehicle for both written and oral communication. In fourth grade, basic skills relating to parts of speech, sentence and paragraph structure and library skills are continued. The fifth grade continues this study in more depth. Sixth graders expand skills and include research, oral expression, book reports, original poetry and essays.
Science The intermediate grades science curriculum consists of four areas of study: Life Science - The Human Body - Physical Science - Earth Science. This program is set up using the previously mentioned spiral format, with the content becoming more sophisticated in each subsequent year. An emphasis is given to hands-on experiments.
Mathematics Curriculum in math continues to build upon basic skills previously learned. Fourth grade encompasses estimation, averages, fractions, decimals, probability, geometry, graphs and metric measurement. The fifth grade continues these skills and adds to them the study of statistics, ratio and percents. Sixth grade includes understanding proportions and integers. All grades stress problem solving strategies with written explanations. Abstract concepts are enhanced with computer software.
Social Studies The intermediate social studies curriculum begins in fourth grade with a study of American History, placing emphasis on New York State. The students' understanding of American history is enhanced in the fifth grade with a concentration on the history of the United States, beginning with the explorers. The children are familiarized with the various regions of the United States, Canada and Latin America. The sixth grade studies the ongoing development of cultures in the Eastern Hemisphere. During sixth grade, beginnings of civilization in the Middle East are examined. Understanding of the subject matter is enhanced through the use of the computer, videos, instructional television, research and projects.
